🌟 Reality: Self-promotion is about describing how you have moved the business forward. It's about owning your contributions to the success of the business and letting others know what you bring to the table. Of course, you need business acumen in order to figure out how to best do this.
👉 Myth 2: Self promotion means being pushy. I look good so you look bad. 😕
🌟 Reality: Self-promotion is NOT about being "one up." It's not about braggadocio. Self-promotion IS about honoring yourself enough to make your contributions visible..and doing so in a way that resonates with career decision-makers (another reason that business savvy is required).
👉 Myth 3: Self-promotion means sacrificing humility.
🌟 Reality: You can be humble and self-promote at the same time. It's about striking a balance between acknowledging your achievements and staying grounded. Remember, Jim Collins writes that Level 5 Leaders have a rare combination of personal humility and intense professional will (meaning focus on moving the business forward).
👉 Myth 4: Self-promotion is selfish.
🌟 Reality: Self-promotion is self-respecting. Passively waiting for recognition is a set-up for disappointment and leaves all the power with someone else. Respect yourself enough to take action and make known your contributions to the business.
Remember:
Self-promotion is about honoring yourself enough to let others know your impact on the business. For that you need well honed business, financial and strategic acumen.
Self promotion is also about respecting others' obligations enough to realize they might not have time to suss out all that you do.
Self-promotion is crucial if you want to be a contender for exciting opportunities to contribute at higher levels, in different parts of the business or to making lives better for your customers/consumers.
